God is in the midst of the city (4).png

As we rebuild and serve, we
seek the welfare of our city...
(Jeremiah 29:7)

The catastrophic flood that took place on July 4th will be remembered as one of the most tragic events in our beloved community. Our hearts continue to ache for those who were lost to the flood as well as their families and loved ones. But as Psalm 23 beautifully reminds us, even though we walk through the valley of shadows and death, God remains with us, ever present, ever loving.

First Presbyterian Church has responded faithfully to the devastation in our community by opening its doors from day one to serve as a reunification center, shelter, and landing place for various organizations providing emergency relief.

We are grateful for the incredible generosity poured out to our community from churches and individuals across the country. Because of these gifts, First Presbyterian Church provided more than $230,000 in emergency assistance to affected families within the first eight weeks. Seventy percent of those funds were used to help for housing needs.

Our commitment to long-term relief and recovery continues as we hired two case managers through grants to help us build relationships with survivors. We have partnered with the Community Foundation of the Hill Country to serve as a designated relief partner within their temporary housing program as well as direct case management. We are also working within the areas of mental health and wellbeing with other non-profits and churches. And our campus remains being utilized by entities like the Center for Counseling and Hope and the Small Business Administration.

We will continue to provide updates as our ministry evolves within Kerr County. As of today, we are not receiving “relief” groups to help us rebuild. However, you are encouraged to visit Kerr Together website to learn about teams who may be on the ground already.

I ask that you continue to keep us in your prayers as we walk alongside our neighbors whose lives have forever changed. You may also donate to our efforts. Our mission moving forward is to primarily fulfill those unmet needs from survivors and to provide assistance in other relief efforts. You may do so by using our GIVE portal or by sending a donation directly to us.

God is in the midst of the city. God is with us.

With love and gratitude,

Rev. Jasiel Hernandez Garcia
