It is that time of the year where musical ensembles at First Presbyterian are commencing with weekly rehearsals at designated times. If you are new to First Presbyterian or haven’t participated in one of these groups before or in a while, you are cordially invited to attend a rehearsal and see if you enjoy being in one of these ensembles. Here is a list of musical opportunities for you and your family at First Presbyterian Church.
First Service Choir/Music Ensemble: This new ensemble will begin on August 27 at the first service. The intention of this group is to give the first service members an opportunity to participate or hear special music on a regular basis that is specifically chosen for this service. Anyone is welcome to participate in this group and rehearsals will be on Sundays at 8 a.m. in the sanctuary. Raquel and Michael Kahl will sing in this group. Choir robes will not be worn nor will the ensemble sit in the choir loft. The music will range from the singing of a hymn to an anthem that is appropriate for the size of the group.
Chancel Choir: This choir sings at the 11:00 a.m. service and meets every Wednesday evening for choir rehearsal from 7:00-8:30 p.m. The Chancel Choir rehearsals will resume on August 24 at 7 p.m. You do not have to attend every week to be in this ensemble. This is a fun group that enjoys making beautiful music while worshipping God through song and prayer. This fall we will be singing a mixture of tried and true classics as well as contemporary works that will vary in style and genre.
Sunday Evening Service Ensemble: This ensemble rehearses on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Rehearsals for this ensemble will resume on August 27. The type of music offered at this service ranges from praise music to Taize and rearrangements of hymns and folk songs.
Solo or special music opportunities in a service: There are solo or small group opportunities on a weekly basis for those who are comfortable and proficient with their instrument or voice.
Children’s Choir: The children’s choir, ages K-5th, will be starting September 7. We will be meeting during our Wednesday Koinonias after-school program. We are very excited that we will be singing once a month during Sunday morning worship. We are also looking forward to leading worship for the Christmas walk in December and putting on a spring musical. Come and join the fun!!
Handbell Choir: On Tuesday, September 13, at 4:00 p.m. rehearsals will resume. I am anxious to present new music from the Mo-Ranch/PAM music conference and my trip to Oklahoma City for the American Guild of Organist Convention. New members are invited to ‘try it out’ for a few weeks. We do a variety of hymn arrangements, classical pieces and contemporary styles that are incorporated into the worship services. Special events include playing for the Christmas Walk and helping provide music for a production of “Scrooge”. Come and ring with us and join the fun.
